What to Expect After a Chemical Peel

Chemical peels are exactly what the name suggests. They’re a chemical solution that is

applied to your face, neck, or hands that dries and can be peeled off. They’re designed to improve your skin’s appearance and there are various types you can get to fit your specific skin needs.

If you’re planning to get your first chemical peel, you may be wondering what to do after. Peels range from mild to intense in strength and it’s important that you know how to properly take care of your skin to get the best results.

Here are a few things you should expect after your chemical peel:

  1. Give it Time to Heal
  2. Adjust Your Skincare Routine
  3. Avoid the Heat

Give it Time to Heal

While everyone wants immediate results, it’s important to keep in mind that you might break out after your chemical peel. But don’t worry, that’s completely natural! The combination of large dead skin and inflammation can lead to pimples but as your skin regenerates, it’ll clear up.

During the healing process, don’t pick at your skin. You may find yourself trying to remove dead skin flakes but they will come off naturally. Picking at it can cause damage as it can cause damage to your skin and lengthen the time it takes to heal. Depending on the intensity of your chemical peel, your skin may need seven to fourteen days for any redness or swelling to subside.

Adjust Your Skincare Routine

As your skin heals, you’ll need to take a break from your regular skin routine. When washing your face, you should use a gentle cleanser with cool water and only use your fingertips. This way, you avoid any rough surfaces from washcloths, sponges, or cleansing brushes. You’ll also want to avoid any tweezing, exfoliating, or waxing as it can lead to scarring.

While your specialist can tell you the exact amount of time you’ll need to wait before you start using makeup again, it’s recommended that you wait at least seven to ten days. Using makeup before then, will delay healing and put you at risk of causing infection, pigment changes, and scarring. Regularly needing to wash your face to remove makeup early into the healing process can also result in redness and further dry out your skin.

Avoid the Heat

Sweating excessively can irritate your skin or lead to blistering as your sweat won’t be able to get past the top layer of dead skin. Avoiding direct sunlight and taking a break from the gym, saunas, or other hot areas will help prevent scarring and hyperpigmentation.

If you do find yourself spending time outside, be sure to use sunscreen. We recommend using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least 30 SPF as it’s safe for all skin types and highly protective.
